Why Waiting for Perfection Is Holding You Back (And How to Break Free)

Leslie and I had some great friends invite us to see Weezer on a whim this week, and let me tell you, the band was unbelievable live. We sang along to "Pork and Beans," "Buddy Holly," "Beverly Hills," and, of course, "Undone – The Sweater Song." The production and storytelling were some of the best I’ve ever seen, and the band was as tight as they come. After 30+ years together, their transitions were flawless. Bridgestone Arena was packed, and because it’s Nashville, the audience was full of Grammy and Emmy winners—just another Tuesday here.

But that perfection was also the issue. They knew they were flawless, and because of that, they just stood there, perfectly playing their instruments. The production was top-tier, no doubt. I even joked with my friend Logan that it was like seeing KISS, just without the pyro. For most of the show, I stood by three friends, who were lead singers in bands, and they loved it.

But here’s where it connects to you and me: we keep striving for perfection. We wait until our creations are "just right" before we share them with the world. We wait for the perfect timing, the perfect conditions. For a lot of us, though, perfect isn’t going to show up. And here’s the kicker: 99.99% of the audience wouldn’t even notice if it wasn’t perfect. I mean they "landed" on stage in space ship to start the show, so really it was about as good as it gets.

Now, don’t get me wrong—I’d go see Weezer again in a heartbeat. But the thing is, it didn’t have to be perfect to be amazing.

If you’ve been following me for a while, you already know I’m not perfect. Heck, this email probably has typos in it. I’ve even created an event that’s not perfect—The Thing—a space for people who are okay with taking action over waiting for perfection. Some of you reading this will wait, thinking you’ll sign up for The Thing when the time is perfect, but here’s the truth: that perfect time probably isn’t coming.

There’s a Japanese proverb that says, "The best time to plant a tree was 20 years ago. The second-best time is now." Sure, I wish we had connected sooner, but we’re here now. And now is the time for you to take action and join us at The Thing, even if it’s not the perfect moment. As I like to say, DO THE THING!

So, this is me inviting you to attend. Use the code PERFECT24 to save 15% off your ticket to The Thing. I’d love to see you at The Thing in Orlando, FL, from November 8-10, 2024, at the Wyndham Disney Springs Resort. This is where leaders, creators, and world-changers come together to connect, grow, and build something amazing.

At The Thing, you’re not just attending an event—you’re stepping into a space where people like you fuel their ideas, elevate their projects and make lasting connections. It’s more than just inspiration—it’s about taking action, surrounded by a community that supports your vision and pushes you to dream bigger. Whether you want to build your brand, grow your business, or make an impact, The Thing gives you the tools, connections, and confidence to break out of the ordinary and do something extraordinary. You’ll meet people who will stand by you, cheer you on, and be part of your journey.

Let’s do amazing things together, even if they’re not perfect. See you in Orlando!

The best is yet to come,
Terry

P.S. TL;DR—Always Striving for perfection is holding you back. Use the code PERFECT24 to save 15% off your ticket to The Thing 11/8-10. See you in Orlando!

My biggest goal is to help YOU discover what you really want and help discover the map to head in the direction and arrive at the destination. You desire. It’s the age old Spice Girls question I ask all my clients:“ Tell me what you want, what you really really want.” Almost immediately after high school I became a full time speaker speaking to students in middle school, high school, and colleges. During that time I accidentally found myself in the music business helping artists navigate moving their dreams from their garage to selling out shows and topping the charts. Standing on stage in a packed arena things began to shift for me.

We’re one week out from The Thing Nashville—and I want to speak to the tension a lot of us are feeling right now. The world feels uncertain. Heavy. I’m a little emotional today. On June 2, 2017, the first Thing began. I closed the day, and we had Lee Cockerell as a surprise guest—he was the VP of Operations for Walt Disney World. My friend and brand powerhouse Leigh Holt spoke as well. Since then, we’ve had Disney Legends, industry leaders, best-selling authors, circus performers, and world-renowned creators all take The Thing stage. All with one mission: to help remarkable leaders do their thing. It’s wild to think that this year marks...
